How Is Upholstery Abrasion Measured?

Upholstery abrasion testing evaluates how well a textile surface withstands repeated rubbing. This performance is especially important for chairs used in restaurants, hotels, waiting areas and offices, where clothing continuously moves against the seat and backrest. Testing helps compare materials more objectively, but the reported number must be interpreted together with the test method and actual application.

Why Abrasion Resistance Matters

Repeated contact can gradually break fibers, change surface texture or expose the backing material. Early wear may appear as fuzzing, pilling, thinning or color change before a hole becomes visible.

The construction of furniture upholstery fabric influences this behavior. Fiber type, yarn strength, weave density, surface treatment and backing all contribute to durability. A heavy-looking fabric is not automatically more abrasion-resistant than a lighter, tightly woven material.

Martindale Testing

The Martindale method is commonly used in many international markets. A specimen is mounted in the testing machine and rubbed with a standardized abrasive material in a controlled multidirectional pattern.

The sample is inspected at defined intervals. Testing continues until yarn breakdown, visible deterioration or another agreed endpoint occurs. Results are commonly reported as rubs or cycles.

Higher results generally indicate stronger resistance under the test conditions, but numbers from different procedures should not be compared directly.

Wyzenbeek Testing

The Wyzenbeek method is frequently referenced in North American upholstery specifications. Fabric is pulled tight over a frame while an abrasive material moves repeatedly across it in two directions.

Results are often reported in double rubs. Testing may use cotton duck or wire screen as the abrasive, and the selected material can affect the result.

Because Martindale and Wyzenbeek use different motions, abrasives and evaluation methods, a result from one method cannot be converted reliably into an equivalent result from the other.

Understanding Test Results

Approximate performance categories can help with initial material selection, but buyers should follow the requirements of the destination market and intended environment.

Abrasion Is Not the Only Requirement

A high abrasion result does not guarantee resistance to every form of wear. Upholstery may still experience pilling, seam slippage, snagging, color transfer or fading.

Commercial chair materials may also need evaluation for:

  • Pilling resistance

  • Colorfastness to rubbing

  • Seam strength and slippage

  • Tensile and tear strength

  • Cleaning chemical resistance

  • Lightfastness

  • Flame-performance requirements

The correct test package depends on the chair’s intended market and installation environment.

Applying Test Data to Chair Production
